A REFLECTION

Social Committee

The Social Committee at the Miller Writing Center has allowed me to expand my communication and organizational skills while also tapping into my creative side. As a member of the committee, I have helped organize a variety of tabling events to promote the Writing Center and our consulting services. Among these events, my favorite was our Valentine's Day Social, where we wrote letters of appreciation to Writing Center Admin, Panera employees, and the Custodial Staff of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. These small acts of kindness make working and leading at the Miller Writing Center so fulfilling.

When I first joined the Social Committee, I wanted to find a way to show appreciation for the hardworking staff at the Miller Writing Center. That's how the "Staff Spotlight of the Week" was born. Every week, I would take time to craft a spotlight on a different consultant, highlighting their major, minor, specialties, and hobbies. This not only showcases the diversity of our team but also inspires clients to seek out new consultants for their writing needs. Most importantly, it's fun and engaging, and everyone enjoys learning about their colleagues' passions and interests. I hope that this tradition continues beyond my time at the MWC, as it has proven to be a rewarding way to recognize the exceptional work of our team!

Hiring Committee

As a member of the Hiring Committee at the Miller Writing Center, I had the chance to gain a deeper understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion through pre-hiring lessons. Exploring topics such as explicit and implicit biases helped me to become more self-aware and contribute to a more equitable hiring process. Throughout the hiring process I participated in job recruitment, reviewed and scored applications, and co-facilitated interviews. These experiences not only allowed me to develop a better understanding of the hiring process, but also helped me to grow as an individual.

One of my favorite parts of the experience was co-facilitating an outreach tabling event with my peer, Zoe. We had the opportunity to answer questions about the MWC, which helped us increase our knowledge about the center and create a new friendship. Overall, being a part of the Hiring Committee was an incredibly fulfilling experience that allowed me to both contribute to the success of the MWC and develop valuable skills.

LGBTQ+ Ally Affinity Group

I had the privilege of being a part of a community of peer consultants committed to fostering professional growth and creating a Brave Space for all. In our Brave Space, we embraced five core elements: Controversy with Civility, Owning Intentions and Impacts, Challenge by Choice, Respect, and No attacks or harm inflicted upon one another. By upholding these values, we created an environment that encouraged honest, constructive dialogue and ensured that every member felt heard and valued.

Through my involvement in the LGBTQ+ ally alliance group at the Miller Writing Center, I had the opportunity to delve deeper into the concept of allyship and how it can be practiced in both academic and professional settings. During facilitated discussions, we explored various aspects of allyship and the role it plays in creating inclusive spaces. This experience not only expanded my knowledge and understanding of allyship but also highlighted the importance of actively working towards creating an equitable and inclusive community.
